EPA/NSF Announce Interagency Opportunity for Grants in Environmental Statistics

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the National Science Foundation (NSF) announce their intent to continue to support an extramural grants program in fundamental environmental research in Fiscal Year 1999. This aspect of the competition, Environmental Statistics, seeks to increase understanding of the physical and human dimensions of environmental policies and issues by supporting the development of innovative statistical methods and models for environmental research. Although primarily geared to the statistical sciences, this competition invites proposals from qualified researchers across the statistical, social, behavioral, and physical sciences. EPA and NSF each anticipate awarding approximately $1 million for this program. The agencies project an award range from $60,000 to $150,000 per year, with an approximate duration of two to three years. The closing date for this competition is March 10, 1999. Educational Testing Service Offers Center for Performance Assessment Postdoctoral Fellowship Program

The Educational Testing Service (ETS) will select one individual, holding a doctorate in relevant fields, to conduct independent research with access to ETS staff at the Center for Performance Assessment in Princeton, New Jersey. An award of $35,000 will be given for the twelve-month duration of the program. Independent research will be conducted for ongoing projects that examine the design of performance assessments; the effective and equitable use of these assessments; inferential issues related to performance assessment; and the implications of performance assessment for teaching, learning, and school reform. The recipient will be selected based upon scholarship and relevant experience in educational settings. Applications must be postmarked on or before February 1, 1999. Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America Continues to Support Research Funding

The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) is dedicated to finding the causes of asthma and allergic disorders, as well as new treatments and a cure. AAFA sponsors seed grants for investigators wishing to explore new areas of scientific merit related to asthma and allergic diseases. Proposals are accepted to all AAFA programs on a continual basis. The AAFA operates three programs. The AAFA-Office of Naval Research Grant is given in funded with assistance from the Department of the Navy, and aims to understand the role of cell surface adhesion molecules in inflammatory reactions such as allergic rhinitis and atopic allergic conditions. Under the Biomedical Research Program, the AAFA sponsors seed grants for investigators wishing to explore new areas of scientific merit related to asthma and allergic diseases. The Health Services Research Program supports asthma and allergy health services to translate the good health practices and policies for asthma and allergy patients and their families into new behaviors and increased resources to the community. Ontario Announces Premier's Research Excellence Awards Program (PREA)

The province of Ontario will contribute a total of $50 million over a 10-year period to allow university researchers to attract graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and research assistants to their research teams. Research institutions or the private sector are expected to match the provincial contribution by providing an additional $25 million, for a total of $75 million to be awarded over the 10 years for state-of-the-art research in the physical, natural, and life sciences, engineering, mathematics, health sciences, and environmental sciences. Wellcome Offers Life Scientists Opportunity to Break from Routine, Write Book

The Wellcome Trust has renewed its annual Prize for Life Scientists to realize their dream of telling the world about their work. The prize will enable the winner to take a break from their normal routine in order to write a book about the work to which they are devoting their career. The aim is to write a book that will educate, captivate and inspire the non-specialist lay reader. The book should be an original account of some aspect of biology, medicine, anthropology or psychology. Citizens of the United Kingdom and Ireland are eligible to apply for this prize.
