United States Prevent Cancer Foundation Announces Availability of Research and Education Grants

The goal of the Research and Education Grants program is to provide funding for innovative cancer-related projects expected to lead to future funding from other peer-reviewed sources. Proposals will be considered for basic, clinical, translational, and population-based research projects; education programs in cancer prevention; early detection projects; and behavioral intervention projects. Eligibility is open to researchers at the instructor or assistant professor level, more senior researchers who have shifted their area of interest toward primary and secondary cancer prevention, and researchers at any academic level who need seed funding to test an innovative hypothesis. Awards begin at postdoctoral level only. Researchers need not be U.S. citizens; however, the research must be conducted in the U.S.A. primarily. Funds will only be granted to nonprofit institutions or organizations. Grants will be awarded for two years at $40,000 per year, for a total of $80,000. Applications are due by February 27, 2009, for Cycle 1 and by September 15, 2009, for Cycle 2. (more info)

United Kingdom EPSRC and NSF Announce Joint Sandpit Workshop in Synthetic Biology

The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and the US National Science Foundation (NSF) are inviting expressions of interest to participate in an interactive five-day residential workshop (Sandpit) to be held in Warrenton, Virginia, USA, March 23-27, 2009. The aim of the sandpit is to stimulate thinking in promising new, or currently underdeveloped, areas of synthetic biology. Synthetic Biology seeks to discover and apply the operational principles of biological systems through the design and construction of biologically inspired parts, devices, and systems that do not exist in the natural world and to redesign existing natural biological systems for useful purposes. Anyone eligible to apply for funding from either the NSF or EPSRC is eligible to apply to attend the sandpit. Applications are encouraged from individuals representing diverse research areas across engineering, physical sciences, life sciences, and the social and cognitive sciences. There will be 20 to 30 participants identified to take part in the sandpit from both the UK and US. The EPSRC and the NSF plan to allocate up to GBP 5.5 million (as of the exchange rate on November 4, 2008) to support research arising from the sandpit. The closing date for applications is 4:00 pm, submitter's local time, on Thursday, January 15, 2009. (more info)

Australia Australian Government Invites Applications for the Rural Australia Medical Undergraduate Scholarship Scheme

Australia's Department of Health and Ageing and the National Rural Health Alliance (NRHA) offer the Rural Australia Medical Undergraduate Scholarship (RAMUS) Scheme to attract more doctors to rural and remote Australia. The scheme assists selected students with a rural background and demonstrated financial need to study medicine. The NRHA administers the RAMUS Scheme on behalf of the Department of Health and Ageing. Scholarship holders' ties to rural and remote Australia are reinforced through a rural mentorship scheme, as well as membership of their university's student rural health club. Scholarships are available to students in any year of their undergraduate or graduate-entry medical degree. Successful applicants are selected on the basis of their rural residency history from five years of age, including primary school attendance in a rural area; and income for the current and previous two financial years. To be eligible for a scholarship in 2009, applicants must be enrolled as a full-time student in 2009 in an accredited Australian undergraduate or graduate-entry medical degree; be an Australian citizen or permanent resident of Australia; have resided in a defined Australian rural area for a minimum of five consecutive years, or eight cumulative years, commencing from the age of five years; become a member of the student rural health club at, or affiliated with, the university at which the applicant is, or will be, enrolled; and not be in receipt of any other scholarships, cadetships, or bursaries with a combined total value of over $6,500 per year. Scholarship holders are required to have a rural doctor as a mentor, and may nominate a mentor of their choice. The deadline for applications is January 19, 2009. (more info)

United States NIH Supports Research on the Effect of Racial and Ethnic Bias on Health Care Delivery

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) encourages the submission of research project grant applications from institutions and organizations that propose to improve the measurement of racial and ethnic discrimination in health care delivery systems through improved instrumentation, data collection, and statistical or analytical techniques; enhance understanding of the influence of racial and ethnic discrimination in health care delivery and its association with disparities in disease incidence, treatment, and outcomes among disadvantaged racial and ethnic minority groups; and reduce the prevalence of racial and ethnic health disparities through the development of interventions to reduce the influence of racial and ethnic discrimination on health care delivery systems in the United States. Applications may be submitted by domestic or foreign, for-profit or nonprofit organizations, and public or private institutions such as universities, colleges, hospitals, and laboratories; units of state and local governments; eligible agencies of the federal government; and faith-based or community-based organizations.
