Nominations Solicited for ASA Distinguished Africanist Award
The African Studies Association (ASA) gives this award to recognize a lifetime of notable contributions to African studies. The award was established in the 1980s to recognize and honor scholars who have contributed a lifetime record of outstanding scholarship in their respective field of African studies and service to the Africanist community. Criteria for the award are the distinction of contribution to Africanist scholarship, as measured by a lifetime of accomplishment and service in the field of African studies. Contributions to scholarship within and without the academic community are considered. Any member of the ASA is eligible to propose a candidate. The award is presented at the Annual Meeting Awards Ceremony and consists of a plaque and a lifetime membership in the ASA. The nomination deadline is February 15, 2009.

Arkansas Humanities Council Invites Applications for Minigrants for Public Programs
Minigrants for public humanities programs are available to support activities that require a small amount of money and that involve time constraints that make it impossible for sponsoring organizations to apply for public program major grants. Public programs involve interaction between humanities scholars and local or statewide audiences such as schoolteachers, school students, retired people, professionals in non-humanities fields, patrons of museums and public libraries, or other groups. Formats for public programs include lecture and discussion series, reading and discussion programs, workshops, conferences, symposia, guided tours, film showings and discussions, community-based residencies, or any other imaginative means of bringing together humanities scholars and specific audiences to examine and discuss ideas, texts, or objects from the perspectives of the humanities. Grants are awarded to a wide range of groups and organizations in Arkansas, but not to individuals. If the applying group or organization was formed for nonprofit purposes, it is likely to be eligible. Examples are schools, colleges and universities, libraries, museums, public radio and television stations, historical societies, local service organizations, and churches. The maximum grant award is $1,500. Applications for public program minigrants are due on the first day of any month, except December 1. The next upcoming deadlines for applications are February 1, 2009, and March 1, 2009.

National Council for Eurasian and East European Research Seeks Applications for National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Collaborative Humanities Research Fellowship
Postdoctoral scholars from the United States in the humanities may apply for collaborative research opportunities for the academic year 2009-2010 at universities and institutes in any country of East-Central Europe and New Independent States (NIS) of the former Soviet Union. Topics are not restricted to regional or area studies; however, the project must involve at least one collaborator from the region and research in the region itself. Especially encouraged are applications with a strong regional focus and the potential to broaden and strengthen international academic linkages beyond the traditional centers such as Moscow, St. Petersburg, Warsaw, and Prague. Countries eligible for research are Albania, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Herzegovina, Hungary, Kosovo, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, and Slovenia. Applicants must be postdoctoral scholars who have U.S. citizenship, permanent resident status, or residence in the United States for three years before date of application. Applicants must have a working knowledge of one or more of the languages of East-Central Europe or the NIS, unless they can demonstrate that their research does not require it. Applicants must propose to conduct at least four months of full-time research, of which two months must be spent overseas. The grant does not provide for collaborators to come to the USA, but does provide support for collaborators' time spent on projects while working with U.S. scholars overseas. Applicants must plan to complete their NEH fellowships by August 31, 2010. The maximum award is $40,000. The application deadline is February 15, 2009.
